Luxury Escape : The Tsitouras Collection

General Information:

On Santorini, legend is almost indistinguishable from reality. And there, on the island reputed to have been the land of Atlantis, the five houses of the Tsitouras Collection are perched on a thousand-foot cliff overlooking one of the most spectacular views in the Mediterranean.

The hotel is famous for its quiet surroundings in harmony with nature. Guests love to gaze at the view and especially to watch the spectacular sunsets from the terrace, accompanied by the silhouette of Maria Callas.

History:

The mansion that forms the nucleus of the Tsitouras Collection was built in 1780. Over the centuries, it has served as a school, post office, and private home, and is now an exclusive hotel. It was renovated in 1985 by the famous collector Dimitris Tsitouras.

Dimitris Tsitouras is a lifelong art lover and historian, as well as the author of many books about the island, known as the Greek Pompeii.

Location:

The Tsitouras Collection is located in Firostefani, just 700 meters from the Main Town of Fira, which can be either a scenic walk or a quick taxi ride. There is a magnificent view of the Volcano from the Veranda. It is easily accessible via Air & Boat transportation, 8 km from Santorini Airport and Athinios Port.
Accommodation:

The Houses have a capacity of between two and five persons each, and are named after the unique collection in each one:

* The TC Villa
* The House of the Sea
* The House of the Winds
* The House of Portraits
* The House of Porcelain
* The House of Nureyev

The Houses:

The House of Nureyev: This is the house preferred by honeymooners, perched as it is above the others in a dancer´s pirouette. The name is derived from the collection of sketches depicting the late, great Rudolf Nureyev in his various appearances in Athens. This house is the only one to have its own veranda overlooking the caldera, which is also visible from the bathroom, through the arched doorway of the house. Among the other features of the bathroom are the rare Isnik ceramic tiles.

The decorative objects and furniture here illuminate aesthetic and conceptual aspects of Greek history: an ancient amphora, a Byzantine icon, an engraving. Two Venetian candelabra, an antique engraved island sofa. The dining room table is a noteworthy piece: the basis a 19th century marble column; the top is a transparent surface of beveled plate glass above which rises the remaining marble column to round its form.

Luxury, elegance, and exceptional quality: all are interwoven harmonically to make an ideal holiday retreat offering comfort, peace and aesthetic appreciation. Inside are rare collections and works of art; outside is the magical landscape of Santorini.

The House of the Sea: The House of the Sea is one of the five unique accommodations at The Tsitouras Collection. It has a characteristic atmosphere of romance, with hints of distant destinations and evidence of the lure of the sea.

Memories of the sea spring up directly and indirectly from among the furniture and objects. Each one of the hand-painted wooden chest covers that once belonged to Mytilenian seamen has a story to tell. Fabulously framed English, Italian and German nautical maps, ranging in date from both the 16th to the 19th century adorn the interior.

The Greco-Roman bathroom has been lined with pristine white marble, accented with black detail. There is a collection of 19th century charcoal sketches of male nudes by an anonymous Greek artist, an 18th century Russian icon depicting the stern figure of St Nicholas, patron saint of the sea, and there is one of the great Picasso rare ceramic pieces bearing three incised relief fish, which even the most demanding of visitors would not expect to find in a hotel.

The House of Porcelain: A collection of valuable white and blue 19th century Minton and Royal Copenhagen porcelain plates worked and painted by hand is the characteristic feature of this house; they are displayed in an authentic china cabinet from the same era. The warm lemon colour of the walls makes the atmosphere particularly hospitable and shows off the furniture, decorations and works of art to the best possible advantage.

Among these are: elaborate Venetian mirrors, an 18th century icon in an old marble frame, a French engraving from the last century, a traditional gate-leg dining room table; an authentic Corfiot commode, a typical card-table and wonderful 18th century ecclesiastical table in the entrance hall.

On the wall behind the Napoleon bed is a magnificent piece of silk embroidered with gold thread; flanking the bed on both sides are specially designed.

Through the arched windows in the dining room one can see the breath-taking landscape, the meeting of sea and sky in a vast blue world with the volcano somewhere in between. A refreshing island breeze brings one back down to earth, but the sense of greatness remains..

The House of Winds: A collection of engravings contained in the travel book by James Stuart and Nicholas Revett. The Antiquities of Athens London (1762-1816) depicting the ancient Tower of the Winds has given its name to this lovely house. Its rooms have high, vaulted ceilings, an airy light blue on the walls, and timeless elegance in the authentic Santorinian period furniture: beauty, harmony, consistency of decor.

Hanging from the ceiling of the living room is a silver Venetian oil lamp adorned with cherubim. Also from Venice are the carved wooden lamps on tall stands that flank the main entrance. A Corfiot commode is surrounded by Biedermeier chairs, while drums from ancient marble columns rest comfortably next to modern furniture, functioning as side tables.

In the bedroom, where comfort is paramount, decor is provided by ceramic Tanagran dolls; three rare photographs of the Tower of the Winds can be found in the dressing room. In this environment, a piano is certainly not an accidental detail: it provides yet another means of expression, enabling the imagination to take wing.

The House of Portraits: This is the core of the initial 18th century structure around which the five luxury houses of The Tsitouras Collection have been built. The name derives from the collection of beautifully framed portraits gracing its walls, alongside oil paintings and engravings of philhellenic subjects. The specially designed furniture, although modern, blends in beautifully with the various Tsitouras Collection pieces.

These include: two large tables consisting of wood and bronze bases and heavy polygonal marble tops; a 19th century wooden baptismal font which has become a marvelous coffee table; an old console, and two superb chests from Mytilene.

The decorative objects have been selected with great care and superb taste: two elaborate 19th century candelabra, antique mirrors in gilt frames, Russian icons, ancient oil lamps, carved wooden cherubs and other gilt pieces from an icon screen, bust of Sappho by an Italian sculptor. The House of Portraits is characterized by a mysterious, dream-like quality with haunting echoes of past lovers.

The Tsitouras Collection Villa: Small luxury villa on the edge of the cliff, right next to the old Tsitouras´ country house.
When you walk in, you're so dazzled by the beauty that you're unsure whether the vision before you has just risen foam-flecked from the sea or wafted in on the air. In fact, the building stands firmly on the black Theran land, flirting with the salt air and caressing the sky. Sulphur, salt, water... Elements with the power of alchemy join in the exciting game of transmutation that its owner knows so well... Inside, the villa consists of a sitting room, a fully equipped kitchen and three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, all carefully laid out to activate the feeling of comfort. Outside is the blue of the pool that appears to merge seamlessly, symbolically into the open sea.

The decorative style is well known. Spare, elegant, luxury. Works of art from Dimitris Tsitouras´ favourite periods - ancient Hellenic, Byzantine and modern Greek - adorn the most unlikely corners, creating surprises everywhere. Furniture, objects, icons, paintings and sculptures, all provide visual stimuli and aesthetic associations, against a mythic, incredibly beautiful backdrop.Plato´s lines in the Sophist are absolutely fitting: ...We´ll tell how, on one side he creates a real house by building it, and on the other side, a second by painting it, like a beautiful day-dream.

Philosophy: Behind the elegant Santorini Hotel and Athens showroom of The Tsitouras Collection lays an entire philosophy. As can be seen from the description of the TC Houses, the Tsitouras philosophy emphasizes the ageless Greek style, with lovely objects demonstrating the sparse lines of classical antiquity, the saintly face of Byzantine iconography, the decorative element of the Renaissance Venetian connection, the opulence of 18th and 19th century objects, and the beauty and functionality of the best-designed products of the present century. For the 21st century, the Tsitouras philosophy aspires to elegant simplicity based on the successful synthesis of all these historical elements, not as an abstract concept, but as a practical proposal for solutions that will make life more meaningful.

Awards: The Tsitouras Collection believes excellence should be rewarded. So they have created Awards and Distinctions given on official and private occasions, Awards that meet a need both in Greece and abroad. For example, on behalf of the Onassis Foundation, they created all the prizes given to the Greek medalists at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Also, a number of companies including Toyota and Roche have asked the Tsitouras Collection to design Cups for Sporting Events, musical occasions etc. But The Tsitouras Collection is perhaps best known for its sponsorship of two local Awards: the Apollo Award for Music and the annual Europe-wide Tsitouras Collection Cup for the best foreign Rider and the best Greek Rider in Equestrian Events.

Crete, the largest and southern most of the Greek islands is a land of astonishing diversity. A place where the three continents of Europe, Asia and Africa converge. A crossroads of civilization, each of which has left its unique mark on our island. It used to be the religious and economic center of the ancient civilized world.

The landscape itself is a combination of snow-capped mountains contrasting with lush, flower-filled plains; unspoilt fishing villages sit side by side with the graceful Venetian towns of Chania and Rethymnon; and always the crystal clear blue waters of the Mediterranean are in sight with lovely beaches and bays.

The climate is mild and dry, with often northerly wind, the "meltemi", that brings a cool breeze on warm summer days.

Luxurious Honeymoon Destinations : Great Mercury Island, New Zealand

If your wedding featured fireworks, several species of exotic birds or a 36-piece orchestra, we think a honeymoon on Great Mercury Island off the coast of New Zealand might be just your thing. This 5,000-acre private island, owned by a New Zealand resident, was only made available for rental last year, and Tom Cruise is among the celebrities who have already taken advantage of it (no word on who he took with him). A 25-minute helicopter ride from Auckland, which is included in the room rate, takes you over a rugged coastline and volcanic hills to the doorstep of the island's two villas--perfect for those "family-mooning" with the in-laws or with children. The chef on the island will cook to order, serving dinner on the beach or anywhere else you care to dine. Rates start at $19,395 per night for up to six people. For parties of seven or more, there is an additional nightly charge of $895 per person.

Most Luxurious Honeymoon Destinations

Having just pulled off the biggest logistical challenge of your life, paid to put your caterer's children through law school, danced with your most hirsute in-laws and made some rather sweeping promises in front of everyone you know, is there a better time to get out of town? In the past, the honeymoon used to be a chance for a newly married couple to get to know each other better. Today, it's a chance to recuperate.

But you still want it to be romantic. After all, the honeymoon is that lovely grace period newlyweds give themselves before returning to reality. For many couples, that means somewhere the two of you can be alone together, but not so alone you can't pick up the phone and ring for room service--or another bottle of champagne and a basket of rose petals.

Whether they opt for a private ocean view or a balcony overlooking their favorite city, honeymooners are often willing to indulge in one final blaze of nuptial glory, damning the torpedoes and full steaming their American Express cards ahead. Of course, not everyone can afford to do what golfer Tiger Woods, second on our list of The Celebrity 100, did last fall when he shelled out a reported $57 million for his extended honeymoon with Elin Nordegren on the yacht The Privacy. (The yacht was also Elin's wedding gift.)

But people don't hold back when it comes to their honeymoons. Allen Kay, a researcher at the Washington, D.C.-based Travel Industry Association of America (TIA), says that even the average American honeymooner wants something special and outspends other kinds of travelers by a factor of more than three.

So, how much should a honeymoon cost? In general, Americans spend an average of $3,700 on their honeymoons, according to a survey by Modern Bride magazine. Just as the general yardstick for the price of an engagement ring is two months of the groom's salary, if the average annual household income for a family of two, according to the U.S. Census, is $61,129, then it is possible to extrapolate that most honeymoons cost about 6% of a household's annual income. For a household earning $100,000 per year, that would be $6,000; for one earning $500,000, it would be around $30,000. (Of course, some couples will spend far more, and others far less.)

Whatever they spend, they are spending a lot. Fairchild Bridal Group's annual American Wedding Survey found this year that American couples spend about $7 billion annually on their honeymoons, accounting for 1.17% of the American travel market as a whole (valued by TIA at about $600 billion, annually).

Honeymoon spending is high for a number of reasons. For one thing, honeymooners are unlikely to stay with family or friends, favoring instead plush resorts or hotels that push up the overall price tag. And unlike business travel, there are no expenses for which you will be reimbursed. (Note to any groom who considers expensing his honeymoon: Don't. You may as well tell your new bride that you stole her wedding ring.) Moreover, honeymoons are often subsidized by parents, grandparents and other relatives, which increases the amount of money couples have to spend. In addition, the feeling that the honeymoon is a once-in-a-lifetime event leads people to splurge for that third bottle of champagne without the usual second thoughts.

The increasing prevalence of second marriages, however, means that the nature of the honeymoon is changing. "People getting married for the second time are turning both the wedding and the honeymoon into a family event. Extended families and multiple generations are coming along on what we're calling 'family-moons,'" says Kay.

Bill Fischer concurs. He is the founder of Fischer Travel, an elite New York travel agency that charges well-heeled members, like ex-Citigroup (nyse: C - news - people ) Chairman Sanford Weill, a $20,000 initiation fee and a $5,000 annual charge, all in addition to service fees incurred when actually booking the vacation. "We just finished planning a four-month honeymoon all over the world for a couple," Fischer says. "They're going to Vietnam, Cambodia, Australia, New Zealand and India. The bride had her sister come over for three weeks, now her parents are there and her in-laws are meeting them in China." Fischer estimates the cost of the honeymoon at $500,000.

According to Donna Heiderstadt, the travel editor at Modern Bride, today's newlyweds are increasingly older, well-traveled and have more discretionary income than ever before. "The average age for marriage now is 27 for the woman and 29 for the man. So they've seen the basic destinations. Now they want to experience something that neither has been to before, so they can share it together, like a romantic safari in South Africa or New Zealand. The beach has been done to death," she says.

To compile our list of the Most Luxurious Honeymoon Destinations we defined romance as including the following elements: luxury, seclusion, expense, privacy, excellent food and wine, sunshine and no kids allowed (no "family-moons" for us unless the children are provided with suitable on-site distractions). Instead of choosing the well-trammeled beaches of Nassau, Jamaica or Acapulco, we selected lesser-known resorts and private islands. While destinations like Hawaii made Modern Bride's list--as well as ours--for a reason, untouched resorts in Bhutan or on Great Mercury Island, a private island off the coast of New Zealand, certainly deserve some amorous attention of their own.

"People come to us, and they say we want to take over an island, castle, villa. Where do you suggest we do that?" says Bill Fischer. "We are there to fulfill their fantasies." If it's your first time as a honeymooner--or even your second, third or fourth--we suggest you let your fantasies run wild. Read on to find out how. Bon voyage!

Luxurious places to lose weight

By Allison Van Dusen, Forbes.com
There are lots of ways to lose that spare tire.

You can join the gym and hit the treadmill every day, or buy the latest in home exercise equipment. You can start a new diet full of salmon, nuts and olive oil, or give up carbohydrates altogether. Then there's an endless number of meal programs to choose from, which do the work for you by delivering your breakfast, lunch and dinner in ready-to-microwave, controlled-portion sizes.

But wouldn't you rather sit back and learn about the keys to getting fit in a resort nestled away on hundreds of private acres under the California sun? Imagine how helpful it could be to kick start your weight loss by meeting with doctors for a medical evaluation, nutritionists to create a personalized diet plan based on your likes and dislikes and a health psychologist to identify your weight gain triggers, intermixed with personal training sessions, morning beach walks and detoxifying wraps.

You would have company. That's because more people are realizing that not only do they not have to go it alone when it comes to shedding the pounds, they can do it in a beautiful setting with the support of a team of experts.
FIND MORE STORIES IN: Canyon | Spa | Therapy | Spafinder

In 2006, Spafinder.com, a website that helps consumers locate a range of different spa experiences, found that the terms "luxury" and "weight loss" were among its top five most searched areas of interest.

Fortified foods are increasingly filling grocery store aisles—and our fridges. But are they good for us? Find out here.

"People want to lose weight in a nice setting," says Susie Ellis, president of Spafinder.com. "They've tried a lot of things and these programs are comprehensive and very successful, and in a luxurious setting. It's really a joy to be at Cal-a-Vie for a week. It is the most wonderful way to lose weight."

While a few years ago women were almost entirely the ones taking advantage of these facilities, men now make up 30% to 40% of spa consumers, particularly at places with a strong medical focus, such as the Pritikin Longevity Center and Spa. And as body-conscious baby boomers retire, they're seeing these types of centers and spas as the best possible use of their disposable income—an investment in their health.

Getting started

While their methods for helping you achieve weight loss vary, most programs begin by getting guests' full health histories and giving them a medical work up. Staffs want to know exactly what kind of workout load your body needs and can handle.

The Dallas-based Cooper Wellness Program gives guests the results of blood tests, a CT-scan and stress tests, among others, in six hours thanks to an on-site radiologist and blood lab.

"It's not that we do tests that others don't," says executive director Connie Tyne, "it's that we have the results instantly. This may be the first time in your life that a doctor looked at your thyroid, blood sugar and heart rate all at once."

Fitness programs are then tailored to each person and his or her workout preferences. At Cal-a-Vie, guests can start their days with a 6:15 a.m. hike through the hills north of San Diego, hit the Pilates studio or work with boxing bags in an abs and jabs class. The Mayflower Inn and Spa, based in northwest Connecticut, encourages people to try new activities and even provides an adult playground with a Chinese jump rope and hopscotch to get their hearts going.

To work, "it has to be fun," says Mayflower president and creative director Lisa Hedley.

Enjoying the rewards

After kicking your butt in the gym, many of these facilities believe it's time for a reward—healthy, gourmet meals that will make your mouth water, and spa treatments that'll make you instantly forget about those sore arms and legs.

When you should work out depends on whether you want to lose inches around your waist or put inches on your biceps. See if you're picking the right time to hit the gym here.

The dinner menu at Canyon Ranch's Tucson location includes a spinach and poached pear salad and seared panko-crusted tofu steak or corn tamales, along with options such as sprouted multigrain or golden flax seed bread. Each item's caloric, fat and fiber content are listed to help guests make good decisions. At Pritikin, dinner might include okra soup, roasted lobster on cous cous salad and a strawberry soufflé.

The focus is usually on giving guests fresh, portion-controlled meals that don't skimp on flavor.

But guests who really want a taste of luxury often head to the spa.

At CuisinArt Resort and Spa in Anguilla, guests can get the Sea Escape Stone Facial and Body Therapy, in which multisized stones varying in temperature are placed on key pressure points to relieve tension. Designed for the busy executive, the Gentleman's Rendezvous combines a hydrating skin facial, a conditioning scalp treatment and massage.

At Green Valley Spa, which is surrounded by red rock canyons in St. George, Utah, you can opt for the body scrub that uses real crushed pearls, microdermabrasion, waterfall therapy or take a spiritual journey through a therapist-guided labyrinth walk.

Brian Coombs, a marketing coordinator for Green Valley, says he's noticed over the years that guests have come to want a weight loss program that doesn't just include pampering, but an approach that takes into account the mind, body and spirit.

"They want to learn how to change patterns and behaviors, so when they leave here, they can continue with that way of life," he says.

It'll cost you

No pain, no gain, they say. But when it comes to luxury weight loss, what might hurt most is the hit to your wallet. Seven-day stays at comprehensive weight loss centers can run anywhere from $3,500 to more than $7,000.

Still, a ritzy retreat may be just the thing to permanently melt that fat—for good.
